Autumn Specials coming up!

There is perhaps still something to find in the forest... Treasures of nature.
Pellas Home Forest - or cliffs...
Laara and Juliet

 - just we would get some more rain, then we got some more mushrooms to pick - but otherwise the early frost nights cut the season rapidly.

All my tomatoes died, the pumpkins I manage to carry inside and cover with blankets and gather the last herbs to dry. The cellar is filled with carrots and potatoes and the onions gave a master crop this year.

Vegan Sheppard's Pie!
So it was time  to have a harvest party - so had thought the active members of our island's Culture Club, Kulturgillet!
A place for 104 islanders
Gjallarhorn was decorated by Virpi and her husband Mikko; she runs the lovely shop My Country Home      http://www.mycountryhome.fi/ - the old hall had never been more beautiful.
Our family became involved when pappa, the father was asked to come and play with Mikko and we others to help with the arrangements.
Iris and I, happy to give a hand

The catering was arranged by Eamon, an Irish-Nauvo cook and his daughter, and yes, pulled beef, potatoes and sallads, it was an honour to the harvest!

The local baker Titti Bruun had made the organic bread

Isak took his job selling tickets seriously
Everyone had helped with the coffee table by baking cakes -
I and Virpi tried not to start before the guests

His most devoted fan...
Little Sun Flower Girl -
songs made for our children on their big day one after another... Now performed for a bigger audience
No evidence from the dance part but yes, we did dance the night away.... Doing together, sharing, that is  the very special thing of  living in a small community like this that I really enjoy - it makes me feel belonging here.

Highlight of the Summer

Every warm sunny day has surprised us this summer when the weather has been cool - more like late spring week after week. However the Midsummer came and people spending summer in our village gathered to the May pole to decorate and raise it together. We have been busy at our summer-jobs, but fortunately the grand-father had made the wreath of our farm when we were still finishing the last tasks.
Grand-mother born in Pellas has always a storage of good stories from the past, also from the old Midsummer traditions.
The pole is decorate with flowers from the nature, not from the garden.
Time to lift up the pole, all the strong men and women were commanded to help and the rest to take few steps back just in case...

Jag tror, jag tror på sommaren.. I believe in summer...

Rumar with Open Arms

Chocolate cake baked with jam from our own cherries, my mother's Kentucky cake, buns and the vege soup with archipelago bread, that was on the menu... A week ago we opened our doors and welcomed everyone to Café Cecilia and to learn about traditional way of renovating houses. The best were the visitors! Eager renovators, curious city-people, friends from the island, foreigners wondering if we really live like this.
August who built our house in early 1870s and his wife Cecilia
Our home is usually full of children, books, news papers, dogs on the floor but for this one day we wanted to show our shiny side...
We had gathered magazines, articles and books from our home library to study
The most lovely china

Paints and brushes we like to use
The main living-room, now a painter's work shop
Veranda waiting for the eager readers

In the new sauna-laundry cottage still log and some of the windows waiting

Linen, putty, old-fashioned nails...
Next year again.. This was fun!

One Week to go!

Week full of preparations for the next Saturday and Wellcome-to-our-village Day!
Päivät ovat olleet täynnä mukavaa touhua, kun ensi lauantain Avoimet kylät -tapahtuma lähestyy!

If the weather doesn't allow us to sit in the garden with our coffee&cake the veranda is a nice place to sit and listen to the rain drops.
Vanhaan saunaankin pääsee kurkistamaan. Ruusu, piharatamo ja kehäkukka hellivät kesävarpaita.
Have a look at the old sauna, too! Bath of rose leaves, calendula and broadleaf plantain for the feet.

Aili Kalela, mother of my mother-in-law and her wedding monograms now decorating sauna curtains...
We are gathering materials, paints, books to see, drawing before and after -signs, wandering how many litres to cook soup.. We are glad to show how it is to live here and how it is to renovate with traditional methods. And most of of to meet people in summer-mood!
Kylttejä, opastelehtiä, kirjallisuuspöytä. Keräämme esille maaleja, pellavaa, työvälineitä, piirrämme ennen ja jälkeen -tauluja, mietimme, kuinka monta litraa soppaa keitämme... On hauskaa päästä esittelemään miten täällä eletään ja miten vanhaa kunnostetaan vanhoilla menetelmillä. Ja on hauska tavata kesäihmisiä!

Finally our summer veranda has got windows. The wooden parts got their last bit of paint and have now dried enough. It is like our veranda can now see - and we, too. The
spring outside.

The coloured glass and the old transparent glass give a special shine to the light that comes in. The laundry-sauna cottage will get its veranda this summer.
Now we'll carry in an old wooden sofa. I know where I will have my morning tea tomorrow.

Thank you, Pia and Atelje Arvids at Hotel Nestor, Korppoo for the coloured glass and a job well done with the installation Lasi Roininen!
